When we heard about the Kisumu Fish Fiesta, we automatically expected it to be an event about fish, it was not.
Fish Fiesta, according to Dr Mathews Owili in an interview with the Star is Kisumu county’s signature tourism event that showcases Kisumu as a vibrant hub for fishing tourism besides giving an opportunity to various stakeholders and visitors to explore existing opportunities in the sector.
What we found as an animated crowd at Kisumu Sports ground, right at the heart of the city pulsating on a spectacle of strong women.
Dead lifting
Although the dead-lifting arena had both male and female competitors, it was the female tourney that drew the crowds gasps.
Fatuma [not her real name] awed the crowd that could have easily underestimated her small frame for the strength she exhibited.
The crowd was taken in by this person who dominated the games yet was not quite expected to be even at the near top of the competitors; she was short, had a very small and slimmed body compared to all.
Inner strength
She was the embodiment of the fact that human strength is not only on the physical aspect but most importantly the mind also plays a big role to it.
Her competitors who had big body sizes would be seen panting hard and some even running out of gas, some collapsed while some forfeited and bailed out before the whole event would complete. She dominated and gave pressure to the reigning champion that would later lead to the ‘champ’ fainting during the obstacle challenges.
New fans
Her enthusiastic style to the weight lifting that she did with ease truly indicated that with a lot of practice one could archive a lot, the procedure to how she approached her obstacles which gave chills to the fans created some bizarre moments cheering her to keep on with the struggle.
She gained new fans, like me, who were really shocked by her strength and physic, our faces could tell that no one was ready for her, or let me say at least only she knew what she was capable of.
Like the Kisumu Fish Fiest festival, Fatuma demonstrated that this city is ready to punch above is weight, Karibu Dala.
